Orthoceras, meaning "straight horn", are extinct members of the cephalopod class. Cephalopod, meaning “head and foot”, which protruded out of the same shell cavity. These primitive sea creatures are similar to the modern chambered nautilus, but grew a straight shell rather than a coiled one. Now extinct, the 345 - 395 million year old Devonian age orthoceras is an ancestor of the squid and octopus. These creatures grew to as much as 60 feet in length. They had a cone shaped shell, which they constantly expanded by adding larger body chambers to it. This fossil is found in the Sahara desert in Morocco, which was covered by ocean 450 million years ago. A plastic display stand is included.
